The research emphasis of the Department of Biomedical Engineering faculty include:

  • Bioimaging and spectroscopy
  • Cardiovascular biomedical engineering
  • Neuroengineering
  • Nanomedicine
  • Neural prostheses with particular focus on artificial vision implants
  • Ophthalmology and ophthalmic simulations, tests and examination devices

In addition, there are 70 members of the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Interdisciplinary Program, with primary appointments in 20 departments across campus, who perform BME-related research in a variety of different areas including tissue engineering, neurosciences, biomodeling and simulation, molecular and genetic engineering, and a variety of clinical specialties.

Faculty at the University of Arizona are highly collaborative, creating a rich environment for research and study in biomedical engineering across disciplinary, department and College boundaries.
