Frequently Asked Questions

Student working in lab

What is biomedical engineering?

Biomedical engineering is the application of engineering and science principles and practice to the improvement of medical care and human health. Biomedical engineers work in areas as diverse as development of tissue-engineered cartilage, design of novel optical endoscopes, prediction of the forces on a vascular graft and attacking disease at the molecular level, among many others.

Where do biomedical engineers work?

Biomedical engineers work in industry, government institutes and labs, universities and research institutes, and hospitals. An undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering is excellent preparation for a position in the biotechnology sector, in both drug and device development companies. More than half of our students continue on to graduate school. A master's degree in BME provides additional training and education, and a doctoral degree in BME provides the necessary skills to lead an independent research program. Undergraduate biomedical engineering is also excellent and unique preparation for health professions school, such as medical school and dental school.

Why the University of Arizona?

The University of Arizona is the leading research university in the American Southwest. As a land-grant university, UA embraces its three-fold mission of education, research and public outreach. The UA has outstanding and co-located colleges of engineering, medicine and science. For undergraduates, this arrangement provides the opportunity to see first-hand how biomedical engineering advances are translated to patient care. Undergraduates will be taught science and engineering from world-class faculty, and have opportunities to acquire hands-on skills in the many research laboratories.
